1. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Final

    Lepidoptera Effect

My final image is a group of computer generated butterflies which are arranged in a specific order to represent the butterfly effect.
The butterflies start off small in one corner of the page, they fan out away from the corner becoming bigger and bigger.
I did this to represent the idea that a small action or small occurrence can create or change something in a big way somewhere along the track for example the famous quote, “
It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world”.
I added some movement to the butterflies that is similar to how i imagine a bug moving around. Also added a cloudy effect over the butterflies to give them a kind of organic context which i liked as it gives a dreamy feel.

  3. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Development

    - Some more experiments with the movement and the grain on my butterflies

  4. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Development

    - Experimenting with movement of the butterflies to give them a semi lifelike quality

  5. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Development

    - Arranged all the butterflies to spread out allong the page getting bigger and bigger.

  6. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Development

    - While I was making these butterflies i thought of different ways to express the utterfly effect with them and thought of using the shapes to generate 3d forms in maya and arraging them in maya.
    - I also thought of getting them laser cut and arranging them in real life but because the images are so intricate and detailed i think the laser cutter might have struggled with it and i may have had to get rid of some of the detail to make it work which I didn’t really want to do because i liked the really detailed forms.
    - Someone suggested making wire models of them as well but also the detail is so intense it would be almost impossible for me to replicate what i had created in python.
    - In the end I decided it would be best to leave them  in python as i could retain the detail of the butterflies

  7. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Development
    - I wanted to give the image a grainy look so that there was some kind of connection between the nature of the butterflies and the abstract generated way they were formed.

  8. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Developement

-Trying out some more ways to express my concept in the arrangement of the butterflies

  9. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Developement

    - Trying out different things, this is just the butterflies moving around the scene in a bug like way.

  10. MDDN 242 - Project 4 - Inspiration

    - This is just an image I found which I think will be a good way for me to arrange my butterflies in my scene

    - I think this illustrates the butterfly effect well.
    - The butterflies start off small in one corner and then spread out becoming bigger and bigger which is kind of like the butterfly effect. A small thing can cause a big and widespread change later.
